Rye Bonfire Society

This is a tradition which is peculiar mainly to Sussex and it is said that Rye is one of the oldest Societies. I was privileged to be secretary for five years from 1978-1983 and during that period we had some spectacular processions including one that had 23 visiting societies and the town was ringed with fire, music and colour. Below are photographs of the bonfire processions are you in them or do you have any you wish to add if so please email me at age@totalise.co.uk

Rye Bonfire once again went of with a bang and the procession was led by the Rye and District Bonfire Society closely followed by the Green Dragon. Floats and visiting societies made up the rest of the procession, finishing with the 'Burning Boat'. After processing around the Town the procession stopped at the Landgate and 'Rye Fawkes' was picked up by the Rye Fire Brigade in a sedan chair and transported to the fire site to light the bonfire. When the bonfire was lit the Town then was treated to an excellent display of Fireworks.

I have added a few pictures of the evenings events below.
