1971 proved to be a quiet year for Ian McCafferty however he still managed to win the National and District 5000m titles. He was joined in the Senior rankings by David Simpson who ran a time of 2hrs 48mins 12secs to finish 37th in the Marathon. Not to be outdone, it was encouraging to see a number of the youngsters appearing in the ranking lists for the first time. In the Youths, both Jim Thomson and Alan Deans won their first national Titles in the 1500m and 100m respectively, with both finishing 2nd in the rankings. Alan also won the District 100m title in a year which he proved to be one of the most consistent performers. 1500m athletes Dougie Frame and Billy Nelson made their rankings debut finishing 16th in the Youths and 8th in the Boys respectively. Billy Nelson capped a fine year by wining the bronze medal at the national Championships. Sarah Latimer became only the third female from the club to appear in the rankings, finishing 11th in the Junior Women's 800m with a time of 2mins 31.5secs.
