Alaister Russell continued where he left off in 1985, winning the 5000m title at the National Championships, his third National Title, with a time of 14mins 58.1secs. This ranked him 2nd in Scotland, the same position he finished in the 3000m. Young Shotts sprinter John Colquhoun was beginning to make his mark, winning the Youths 200m at the District Championships and finishing 5th and 2nd in the 100m and 200m rankings respectively. It was pleasing to see the girls back in the rankings with the diminutive Kay Dodson finishing 13th in the Marathon rankings and Marie Rodgers finishing 5th in the 75m Hurdles. Douglas Frame appeared in the Half Marathon Rankings, thus taking over Jim Thomson's record of nine yearly appearances.
