In order for the wooden keys to vibrate ‘cleanly’ they are held off the Neem framework by about six or seven rolls of goat leather, shown in the picture between the key and frame. These soft supports are held in place with more leather and string binding that is also used to attach cross members across the sides of the instrument under each key, shown more clearly in the next picture.
