Open Water Training Site

Littleton Pit

During the warmer months training takes place in open water for those groups that require it (Open Water Snorkeller and above). Though inshore waters are excellent experience for all concerned, protected waters such as this are invaluable for training snorkellers, new to the open water environment, allowing safety and calm water close to home.

The lake is a disused gravel pit which has been taken over by the Civil Service Sailing Club. The whole site is made up of two lakes, the smaller of which is maintained specifically for divers and snorkellers. It is restricted to member clubs only, the fees of which go towards maintaining the lake and its grounds. In recent years the C.S.S.C. has provided a car parking area within the fence of the grounds, allowing for safe changing and kitting up. Though there are no other facilities at this time, it makes for an ideal site to practice open water skills.

Under the water there has also been provided an abundance of sights to see. There is an underwater training platform, a number of old (and now quite rusted) cars, and even an old cabin boat that can be explored. There is also a lot of water life, such as Pike and Bream, as well as various birds at the surface.

The lake is situated set back from the road at:

We meet in the car park to kit up and get briefed for the days snorkelling. Just follow the sign marked "‹- Divers", which points to the left as you enter the main gates to the lake.

All divers effected will be informed in advance of their requirement to attend.
