Lulworth 1999

Well, what can we say about this one. It was a very eventful weekend. This was the first year that we managed to gain access to a dive boat. The boat was launched from Kimmeridge Slipway, early on Saturday morning. It was driven round to Lulworth Cove, but our Boat Officer, Matt and instructor Craig. At this point all seemed fine. The dive plan started off with a little excursion along the shoreline of Lulworth Cove with the Open Water Group. The Advanced Group were taken out by Matt in the boat, into the cove to learn about diving from small boats, and basic boat handling.

After a while it became apparent that there was hole in the hull, which was letting in water and making the boat sink slowly. It could not sink completely as the tubes held it safely above the water line, however handling suffered. We decided to bring the boat out of the water for safety as the sea conditions were worsening. It was better to get it out now rather than later as it would have been very difficult.

We next moved round to Stair Hole, where Matt took us out through the arch in the cliff wall to see what it was like in the open sea. The conditions within Stair Hole were better than in the cove as it was more protected from the elements. We remained in the Hole snorkelling around until it was time to get out and book into the youth hostel.

On the Sunday we went to Man 'O' War Bay. This was protected from the  winds from the southwest, providing us with a safe snorkelling environment. We snorkelled out into the seaweed fields, this was made up of kelp and bootlace weed. It looked like an underwater forest.

We then snorkelled out to the large rock blocking the entrance to the cove, then we snorkelled round this and then came back to the beach where we packed up for the day.

We then drove to Weymouth to have our packed lunch and have a look around the town.
