Sponsored Snorkel for Milly's Fund

On Tuesday 29th October 2002, the club held its first fund raiser for Milly's Fund. The plan was to do a sponsored snorkel, one hundred lengths in one hour. It had been done before and the plan was to do it again. Everyone had been collecting pledges of sponsorship from friends, family, work and school in order to raise money for the charity.

Everyone was on pool side early, which was a novelty, and when the pool emptied everyone lined up at the deep end ready for the word go. The intention was to go at your own speed, and do as many lengths as you can in the time given. Everyone gave the ok signal to say that they were ready, and on the word GO, everyone jumped in.

From then on everyone concentrated really hard. They pushed themselves to their limit of endurance. Everyone did really well. Looking around there were snorkellers really working hard, finning along a great speeds. It didn't take long to tire, but they all put on a brave face and kept going. I think the instructors felt it the most, being old and grumpy, and not used to exercise...

Many parents waited on pool side counting lengths, and others waited in the spectators area watching with excitement. As he hour went on I saw snorkellers fighting through cramp and tiredness, without a single complaint. I was very proud of them all.

I was amazed at one point when I saw Emma Richards floating on the spot. Thinking she was tired I asked her if she was ok. Her reply to me was, "I've already done one hundred and two lengths, what do I do now?" I was shocked, it was still only 8.15pm, and we had another quarter of and hour to go before we were supposed to finish. I couldn't believe it, I was struggling to keep up at 70 lengths by that point.

Anyway, she, I and everyone else kept going. When the hour was up, we all got out and tallied our results. Everyone had done amazingly. Emma came top with 118 lengths, but everyone did really well. The combined total number of lengths was 2076, which is 72,660 metres snorkelled in total to raise money for Milly's Fund.

Well Done to everyone who took part.

Further update...

On 3rd December 2002, final counts were made of the monies collected in in order to present a cheque to the charity. Sally Dowler attended to accept the cheque, and present certificates to all those who took part. The final amount raised was £ 1484.75p. There is still money coming in however. Plans are also on the go for further fund rasiers, so watch this space!
