The footballing mecca that is
Northampton Road may not have been sampled by many of Green
Balls' readers, but it is a sight not to be missed... maybe. Currently
sharing the ground with the Cricket Club, West Haddon FC are
moving to a purpose-built pitch on an adjacent field hopefully
in time for season 2001/2002. An
impressive (for this level of football) clubhouse hosts the
after-match drinking, and Grandstand on BBC1 if the match
outside is decidedly dull. West
Haddon FC are famed throughout the Combination for the quality
of their half-time cuppa, available for a bargain 20p from
Pauline. Players and ref's alike always look forward to those
winter games when they come to West Haddon because of Pauline's
cuppa! Crowds can
occasionally be counted on the fingers of one hand (!) but
there's usually a hardcore band of village folk who turn out to
support the club. The 1999 Cup semi-final against Heyford
attracted a crowd of nearly 100! Yes
for that true "grass roots football" feel a visit to
Northampton Road is all you need. David
