• Written by David Hurdman & Hannah Hurdman • Recorded by Doonvarna (Catherine Hurdman – keyboard, David Hurdman – acoustic guitar & vocals, Hannah Hurdman – whistle, Richard Hurdman – drums) A turbulent past is hidden Beneath Winceby's rolling hills. In 1643 they bore the brunt Of weary England's ills.
The city of Hull was under siege, But ousted with no hint of fear At Boston Cromwell massed his men; His intentions they were clear. The army departed, target in mind - Bolingbroke was besieged. The army kept moving onwards, The Royalists to engage. But a problem was encountered - At Winceby village they drew reign. Outriders sighted Royalist troops And the plan was quickly changed.
(Chorus) The two sides met at Winceby, The hamlet saw its darkest day. Cromwell came so near to death But the battle sealed his fame.
Though weary the Roundheads charged at once But the odds were stacked against them. Cromwell was caught up in the volley, His horse shot from beneath him. He was charged again by Sir Hopton, Who called on him to surrender, But Cromwell struggled to his feet - Cavaliers were swept asunder. Cromwell seized another mount, Though barely could he walk. Cavaliers were sent helter-skelter, Only safe when reaching Newark.
(Chorus)
In the rout which followed the second charge Sir Hopton, he was slain. His comrades met their maker In Slash Hollow and Slash Lane
Next day Cromwell rode to Horncastle, The churchwarden was sought out. He arranged an honorable burial, Chivalry amidst the bloody rout.
(Chorus)
