Three Peaks and Two Ends

Park & Ride   n

A Lands End to John O-Groats cycle ride visiting the three highest peaks (Snowdon, Skafell Pike and Ben Nevis). As updated daily.

Departure was on April 15th 1998 with anticipated arrival 1100 miles later in the middle of May. The built up to the ride was commenced just after Christhmas (1998) with occasional training rides of 20 miles around the New Forest. A few longer rides were achieved in the weeks before the off, culminating in a 50 mile ride with the Wessex section of the CTC. This was the first time I had ridden 50 miles for some 30 plus years.

The Charities

I rode from Lands End to John O’Groats, via Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis for The Rotary Club of Ringwood’s Life Cycle Appeal. A total of 1,100 miles. Some £4000 was raised for the the Mines Advisory Group and to provide a Cardiac Monitor for the people of Ringwood.

Mines Advisory Group

In Laos 50% of casualties from antipersonnel mines are children under 16 years old. £50 pays for 5 locally trained Mine Disposal Personnel for one day in Angola. To assist their cause the Mines Advisory Groups only had (1998) a total of 50 staff to cover their worldwide operation.

Ringwood Cardiac Momitor

A Cardiac Monitor for the people of Ringwood has also been chosen for this Appeal to celebrate both the 50 years of the National Health Service and the Rotary Club of Ringwood. This monitor will dramatically reduce the months of waiting for a hospital appointment and will be housed at the Ringwood Health Centre.

This Appeal was a wonderful opportunity for the people and businesses of Ringwood to demonstrate that they are a caring community.

The Sponsors

Equipment

Toshiba Libretto 70CT Laptop

The small Paperback book sized laptop computer was ideal for this journey - small and light enough it also acts as a handy repository for route information as well as providing a link for updating this web page whilst on the move.

Panasonic 3CCD DV Video Camera and Stills

This video camera is a high quality video camera which is suitable for both professional and semi-pro video work. ts 3 CCDs provide very high quality video recording, whilst the digital stills capability is particularly suitable for getting images into this web site, since htey can be downloaded directly to the Libretto and then posted onto the Web.

Communications

Conventional PSTN modem as well as a GSM data link capability ensure that data can be sent and received almost anywhere along the route.

Navigation

The route has been prepared using AutoRoute to calculate a non main road route from Lands End to John O-Groats. This has been converted into a list of wayponts which can be uploaded into the GPS unit prior to each days journeying! Special points can also be saved, for example when a video or Still is taken and used to ensure that the route details are correct.

Cycle

Giant Expidition,24 gears, aluminium frame, adjustable angled handlebar stem and dynamo lighting. Front and rear panniers plus handlebar bag and rear top panier. Includes mileage computer, Garmin GPS and Handheld traneivier all located on the handlebar Control Centre. Plus a kiddies Raleigh bell.
