Day 26
Helmsdale to john O'Groats
Distance 56 miles Average 10.5MPH
From the bedroom window there was a colourful rainbow and a shower of rain but during my ride there was no rain at all, however from the dinning room window in the evening there was also a rainbow but this time rain close by. This must be somewhat unuasul to hve two rainbows on the same day and not get wet!!
The wind was with me all morning and changed to a side wind then dropped altogether as I reached John O'Groats. the mountainjs across the Muray Firth were very clear all day and I was suprised that there was land in the south east so clearly visable at a distance of 30 to 50 miles.
The Orkny Islands where also very clear when I reached John O'Groats at 17:00 this evening at the end of my 1,195 mile trip.
On the long 3 mile climb out of Helmsdale I was overtaken by a rider from Southampton who was on his 10 day from Lands End. The road from Helmsdale is more undulating than from Inverness, in fact some are walking type hills. On one down hill section I reach my maximum for the trip of 39MPH on a steep down hill section with no nasty corners like most steep decents seem to have.
I have booked into a B&B at Jon O'Groats leaving 17 miles back to Wick for tomorrow.
