Day 19
Cockermouth to Eskdalemuir
Distance 62 Average speed 10.0 mph
An early start was made from Cockermouth but the steady northerly wind was up before me, although there was not enough wind to drive the wind turbines near Carlisle the effect on me was real enough or was it all in the mind! For those with any wish to calculte the speed then a handfull of grass dropped from shoulder height landed about 6 paces away, all answers on the back of an email please. (Take g = 32.2 ft/sec/sec)
The road out of Cockermouth ia as usual uphill but around Carlisle the land is quite flat and from Carlisle to Langholm was also mostly flat. However turning of the A7 onto the B709 a few more hills got in the way. For the most part all the main roads that I used where relativly traffic free except in the envorions of Carlisle.
The first tea stop of the day was at Longtown in the community centre as suggessted by the Tourist Information lady next door to the centre. The next tea break was at Langholm only 12 miles further up the road but the last tea shop before my overnight accommadation in the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Centre at Eskdalemuir. They offer dinner bed and breakfast for £22.00. The evening meal was rather basic but when your hungry who cares. They are building a Budist temple here.
Cockermouth to Eskdalemuir Tibetian Centre.
The river Esk and its valley are well worth visiting particularly with the sun out like it has beeen today, no sign of rain.
Whilst walking up hill with a local I understood him to say there was a memorial to Thomas Telford in Bentpath unfortunatly I was unable to find it, but did find the road that paralleled the main road.
Futher up the valley I met a unemployed chap who lived about 60 miles away and was cycle camping between each visit to the employment office, a much better way of spending his time if there truly was no work to be had!!
Yet another unemployed chap was at the Tibetian Centre having arrived from Bournemouth two days earlier.
