MA Visual Arts: Critical and Contextual Practices

Your first days will be spent in enrolment and induction. Enrolment will take place on the Gosta Green site and induction at the Bournville site. A tour of key libraries will be organised as part of induction.

After enrolment, you will be introduced to the course team and to your fellow students. The staff team is as follows:

Course Director (designate), Dr Joan Gibbons has previous experience in this capacity on an interdisciplinary course and is engaged in interdisciplinary research for a book to be published in April 2003. She has a wide knowledge of theory and will teach criticism and ways of writing.

The Head of Department, Professor Tom Jones has pioneered independent learning in art and design though the BA in Art and Design by Negotiated Study at UCE. He is completing a programme of doctoral research on social learning in Art and Design and will teach modules concerned with, educational theory, adult learning, approaches and methodology.

Peter Grego, Assistant Head Of Department, has extensive experience in independent learning at undergraduate level. He is a practicing artist/curator with an established research profile within art and design. He will teach Business Skills.

Nigel Prince, Senior lecturer, has a well-established reputation in curatorial work, having organised several exhibition and collaborated with highly reputable galleries such as the Ikon. He has experience in teaching curating at postgraduate level at Goldsmiths College. He will teach Models and Methods in Curating.

Kate Broom, Senior lecturer, has a background in art therapy and has delivered papers at prestigious international conferences. She has experience of teaching at MA level in the field of Art Education. She is also experienced in teaching through reflective practice and is currently working for Mencap, developing a web-based educational programme for social inclusion. She will teach Art and Health.

You will be allocated a pastoral tutor who you will be able to contact by phone or e-mail. Academic tutorials will normally be arranged through lists displayed on the course noticeboard.
