STUDENT CHARTER

Birmingham Institute of Art & Design is committed to providing high quality education, and equal opportunity, for all students. It endeavours to offer a professional, friendly and caring environment which encourages you to develop to your full potential.
You are entitled to a course of high quality. In particular, you are entitled to expect from the Faculty:

  1. a course handbook, containing information on your course, including aims, objectives, structure, content, assessment regulations and the appeals system.
  2. a safe working environment and relevant health and safety information.
  3. access to your own academic records.
  4. advice on course options and the possibilities for transfer to other courses, course units or course modes in the Faculty.
  5. confidential access to all your Course Tutors, your Head of Department and the Dean.
  6. confidentiality of personal and academic information.
  7. constructive help and guidance from all members of academic, administrative and technical staff.
  8. early notification of examination dates and submission dates for assignments and projects.
  9. high quality teaching marked by punctuality and clear instructions about what is required of you.
  10. impartial treatment.
  11. information about the University, its procedures and the services it offers.
  12. prompt notification of your marks for assessment.
  13. prompt return of relevant course work.
  14. reasonable access to facilities that will enable you to complete your work.
  15. the opportunity to contribute to the evaluation of your course and of the college.
  16. where appropriate, a guide to each course unit, including objectives, content, and the nature of the assessment procedure.
  17. where relevant, provision of a transcript of grades or marks, upon request, after you have left the University.

Your responsibilities are:

  1. compliance with relevant University and Faculty regulations.
  2. electing and supporting student representatives.
  3. handing in all projects, essays and assignments on time.
  4. informing the appropriate tutor of any circumstantial changes that might affect your progress.
  5. intelligent and proper use of University staff and resources.
  6. maintaining your current address in the university records.
  7. prompt payment of all fees due from you to the University.
  8. regular and punctual attendance at all obligatory sessions.
  9. regular use of tutorial facilities.
  10. to act at all times in a manner which respects other members of the University.
  11. to help in maintaining a healthy and safe working environment.
  12. to respond, when requested, to surveys on student satisfaction from the Centre for Research into Quality.
  13. undertaking the necessary preparation for study.
