The Student Services Department offers advice, support and guidance throughout your time at UCE. It offers a number of professionally staffed services, which include the following:
The Careers Service plays a key role in developing and enhancing your employability. It provides individual careers guidance, careers information and careers education activities. You can access this service during your time at UCE and after you graduate, through a drop-in service operated from the Perry Barr, Westbourne Road, Gosta Green and Millennium Point campuses. Alternatively you can contact the service by email at careers@uce.ac.uk
The Job Shop offers vacancies from local employers who do not require students to work more than 15 hours a week during term time. Both the Careers Service and Job Shop also employ a number of UCE students throughout the year, providing opportunities to experience information and employer liaison work.
The Chaplaincy is staffed by 3 full-time chaplains, 1 Anglican and 2 Catholic. There are also a number of part-time chaplains representing other denominations. The main Chaplaincy office and meeting space is located at Perry Barr but Chaplains also regularly visit other UCE sites. There are Muslim prayer facilities at Perry Barr and Westbourne Road, and a Catholic chaplaincy house with a chapel at the Coppice Halls of Residence. There is also a chapel on the Hampstead Campus.
The Chaplains offer support in a variety of ways, including prayer meetings,
free weekly lunches, relaxation lessons and traditional and non-traditional
services and events at Christmas and Easter. The Chaplains also offer a round
the clock emergency response service in
situations such as critical illness. For further information you can visit the
Chaplaincy Website at www.FAITH.uce.ac.uk
UCE has 2 nurseries, one located at the Perry Barr Campus and the other at Westbourne Road. They aim to provide a stimulating environment for children aged between 12 months and 5 years. Both nurseries offer appropriate indoor and outdoor activities, including an early years education course.
There is also a teacher mentor assigned to each nursery offering support, guidance and training courses in specialist areas such as child protection.
Both facilities are available all year round and are inspected regularly by Ofsted. All staff are police checked and hold recognised qualifications.
Should you find yourself faced with problems or difficulties which threaten to interfere with your well-being or ability to study, the counsellors offer a 1 to 1 confidential service designed to help you find ways of managing them more effectively. The Service also runs groups from time to time on issues such as anxiety management, and publishes a number of leaflets on counselling, exam preparation and effective study. Self- help is also available in the form of information leaflets covering a range of issues such as stress, eating disorders and misuse of alcohol and drugs.
You can make appointments with counsellors at 5 UCE campuses and all sessions take place in appropriately discreet, comfortable rooms. If you need to see a counsellor urgently, there is an emergency appointment each day at the Perry Barr site.
Disability Advisors are on hand to support any student with a disability and they are able to give specific guidance to teaching staff on alternative teaching methods and assessments if required. A personal assistance scheme is also operated, which recruits and trains students as support workers for disabled students. The service is based at Perry Barr, but can visit students at other campuses if required. Alternatively you can contact us by e-mail: disability.service@uce.ac.uk
This service is available on a drop-in basis at 6 of the University's campuses:
Perry Barr, Bournville, Westbourne Road, TIC, Gosta Green and Margaret Street.
In addition, the service can also be contacted by e-mail: student.finance@uce.ac.uk.
The main role of the service is to provide information, guidance and practical
assistance with regard to money management. Debt counselling is also provided
if at any time
you are experiencing financial difficulties.
Advisors working for the Service have knowledge of all student support funding and the UK benefit system. They are able to allocate money from various sources including the University's own Hardship Fund. Further help is available through Funderfinder, a computer package that matches students to particular trusts and charities they might be eligible to claim from.
