Internet Workshops

The workshops on this site were aimed mainly at health professionals wanting to improve their Internet skills. They are divided into two groups: -

I. Finding Information on the Internet

  • Getting Started on the Internet
  • A Guide to Searching the Internet
  • Finding Medical Information on the Internet

II. Learning the Language of Web Pages

  • Basic HTML
  • Intermediate HTML

This workshop is suitable for the complete beginner. Individual tuition is available for those who are not familiar with the Windows environment (using a mouse, opening and closing windows etc.) or with the use of a browser (Internet Explorer)

Having learnt the use of these tools there is an introduction to the basic concepts of the Internet including safety aspects (viruses), followed by a description of an all-purpose searching strategy for finding information using the Internet.

The key to successful searching is to know the correct resource to use for different types of questions. This workshops expands on the search strategy explained in the first workshop, and demonstrates how and when to use: -

  • directories
  • search, metasearch and natural query engines
  • on-line databases (Invisible Web)

The workshop also covers finding the main evidence-based medicine sites, and on-line databases.

This workshop covers the use of Medline and is intended for health professionals only.
