John Dolan, born in Belleek in 1882 (83?). After his father had died (at the age of 9, when his father died) the family went to USA (Baltimore) and spent 3 years there; he returned to Belleek and schooled there before starting work aged 14 in Belleek pottery making flowers for parian. Brothers Willie & Joe (who stayed in USA and lost touch; Joe died at Somme? in WWI), Michael (settled in Glasgow, married to Bridget McLaughin also from Belleek), sister Rose (who stayed in USA with an aunt/uncle called Branley, married Tom Howard). Married to Margaret McCann in Belleek in Jan 1909.

John came to Glasgow in Jan 1908 to work in Possil pottery (which closed just before WWI) living in Saracen St until 1922. During the war he provided book-keeping services in Hamilton (HQ of HLI) as his contribution to WW-1. Then on Maryhill Rd (near Bisland Dr) until 1926 when he moved to 18 Dunure St. Opened his first shop at 406 Maryhill Road in early 1920s (1923?), while also running an illegal betting service (which he discontinued once income became stable). Worked with Prudential Insurance. In 1926 opened shop, the 'Handy Stores', 5 Buccleuch St. Glasgow, where he worked until he retired in early 1950s. Built the Bawns house in Corlea in the 1930s. Lived in Glasgow until 1960 when on holiday to Ireland wife took a massive heart attack and they stayed there. Died in 25 Dec 1978 aged 96.

Margaret McCann, born 1884 in Corlea, 4th of 5 daughters of Pat & Mary McCann. Lived with her grandmother in Belleek Main St (Tessie's house).Went to Belleek school, Married John Dolan and moved to Glasgow in 1909. Lived there until returned to Ireland in 1960, where she had a heart attack and stayed there until she died on 23 Feb1972 aged 88.

Mary Dolan, 1st daughter of John Dolan, born 25 Mar 1910. Went to Ireland aged 4 and stayed until 1923; she joined her Aunt Lizzie for a visit to Glasgow and wouldn't come back. She went to Notre Dame through 1925. Worked with father in shop from then until retired at aged 60 and sold the shop. Then worked managing bookmakers shops (Drumchapel, Garscadden) for Tony Queen until aged 68. Died 16 Aug 1983 in Belleek.

Ciss (Elizabeth) Connelly, 2nd daughter of John Dolan, born 15 Nov 1911. Went to St Agnes' primary and in 1924 went to Notre Dame secondary and then onto teacher training college. She taught until 1943 when she got married to Thomas Connelly. Continued to teach until 1948. Had daughters in 1948 (Eileen), 1949 (Anne, died in 1976? 1977?), 1954 (Margaret). Went to live in Germany Jun 1953-Aug 1955 when her husband retired from the army. Lived in Skirsa St and then from 1966 Carrbridge Dr, Wyndford. Returned to Glasgow and taught after Margaret went to school, retired from that in 1973. Died 11 Oct 1999.

·         Helen (called Eileen) born 1948; married Gerry Brady, children Anne (1978), Cait (1981), Mhair (1984 or 83) and Michael (1986), grandson Mark (1995).

·         Anne born 1949; married Robert Strickland, child Jennifer. Anne died 1976?.

·         Margaret born 12 Mar 1954; married Dennis McIlmoyle, child David (1975).

Rose Dolan, 3rd daughter of John Dolan, died May 1917? of flu aged 1?.

Margaret (Peggy?) Dolan, 4th daughter of John Dolan, died May 1917? of flu, aged 2.

Sarah Ward, =5th daughter of John Dolan, twin of Tessie, born 28 Jun 1918 in Glasgow but frail as a child and brought up in Corlea (Co Donegal) and went to Cashelard school. Came over to Glasgow in 1936 and stayed there working in the shop until 1945, when she returned to Belleek and started work in the pottery, where she painted. Married in 1958 to Mickey Ward (at which point the pottery rules meant she had to stop work) and moved to live in Bawns, Corlea. Died 18 Nov 1984.

Tessie McGoldrick, =5th daughter of John Dolan, twin of Sarah, born 28 Jun 1918 in Glasgow brought up in Corlea. School in Cashelard (Co Donegal) until 16 and then worked on the farm in Corlea. Married Hugh McGoldrick in 1957. Lived in Lowry Bene at Mulleek and moved in 1963 into Belleek (house once owned by her great-grandparents, the Montgomerys).

Brigid Shields, 7th daughter of John Dolan, born 25 Feb 1921. Attened Notre Dame and then Glasgow University and then teacher training college. Taught various primary schools during WWII and switched in 1946 to teach maths in Garnethill secondary. Married on 4 April 1953 to Jimmy Shields. Four children (Patrick Joseph, John Gerald, Jim, Mary Frances). Occasional supply teaching, back to teaching Jan1965 in Cumbernauld for two years and then to Charlotte Street in 1967, until she retired Dec 1980.

·         Patrick born 16 Mar 1954; married Sue Tipton in 1987. Children Katharine Rose (1993), Sarah Josephine (1995). Living in Cheltenham.

·         John born 10 Mar 1955; married Cate Boland in 1977. Children Mark (1984), Ryan (1987), Paul (1990), Aidan (1995).

·         Jim born 4 Feb 1957; married Eve Parker in 1981. Child Nicholas (1988).

·         Mary born 17 Jun 1960; single.

Agnes Dolan, 8th daughter of John Dolan, born 4 Nov 1923. Brought up in Glasgow, attended Notre Dame from age 5 to 15. Went to work in Scottish Legal until 1942 and then went to Corlea, Ireland where she lived until 1945. Came back to work in Scottish Legal until 1972 and then returned to Belleek to look after father <someone suggested she was only 31 years in Belleek??>. Then worked in sales office in Belleek pottery until 1987. Lived in Belleek until she died 17 Mar 2008.

Michael Dolan, one son Joe (died Italy WWII) and two daughters. Died in 1952. Wife Bridget McLaughlin who died ~1957.

·         Rose Dolan, daughter of Michael Dolan, (born Musselburgh 1911) lived in Glasgow. Catering manageress in Greens' (cinema/dance hall), died 17 Dec 1975.

·         Mary Dolan, daughter of Michael Dolan, lived in Glasgow. Buyer in C&A. Died 1974.

·         Joe, who was killed in WW2 in Italy.

Willie Dolan - stayed in USA in 1894; lost touch; though to have died WW1.

Rose Dolan - stayed in USA with the Branley family, married Howard.

Joe Dolan - younger brother of John, killed in WW1.

Pat & Mary McCann, mother (nee Montgomery, died 1941) of (order?) Sarah (emigrated to USA, Boston, before WWI, single, died in USA, 3 Jan 1965), Lizzie, Ann, Patrick, Margaret, Tessie (who lived in Acres), Johnny?? (emigrated to USA ~1919, married Elizabeth Gallacher also from Belleek and had four children (William, Mary O'Toole died 18 Nov 1984, Francis who was killed at Pearl harbour, Leo died 8 May 1977); died 11 Feb 1937). Dennis (married Margaret Callan in Glasgow; children Anna, Thomas Francis, Eric, Liam, Margaret, Denis - girls alive living in Milton, Glasgow), Thomas (died 15 Mar 1984).

Lizzie McCann, 2nd daughter of Pat & Mary McCann. Once worked in Belleek pottery but had emigrated by 1909 to USA (with Hugh McGoldrick's mother?) and lived in Boston as companion to a Mrs Chapin (a great?? grand-daughter of Paul Revere). Returned in 1922-1923 to visit Glasgow & Ireland. Finally returned in 1959? 1961? to live in Corlea. Died 1 Jul 1974.

Ann McCann, 3rd daughter of Pat & Mary McCann. Lived all her life in Corlea and attended Cashelard school (different one from her nieces, over near Breeze). Came over to Glasgow for various child births. Died 6 Oct 1974 aged 88.

Patrick McCann, eldest son of Pat & Mary McCann. Lived in Corlea, drove lorry for Creamery and then farmed. Married Maggie Dolan (unrelated to John Dolan), children -

o    Kevin McCann, eldest son of Patrick McCann. Was sales manager at Belleek Pottery for many years. Used to run petrol station and shop, now retired. Lives in Belleek with his son Patrick and daughter Mary. In 2008, still going but on dialysis multiple times weekly.

o    Mary Bridget McCann became a nurse and then married and lives in Co Louth, Ireland.

o    Patrick McCann, son of Patrick McCann, married Rose and lived in Belfast until he died in Feb 2008. Children Hugh (headmaster, retired 2007 married to ?Catherine?, 4 children), Kevin (bought Bawns house from Ciss, married to ???), Marrion, Gerard.

o    Tom McCann. Married into a large Italian family. Died.

o    Annie McCann. Trained as a nurse in Ruchill & Southern general in Glasgow and then nursed in Enniskillen before retirement.

o    John McCann worked in Belfast and then Manchester all his life, and has since retired to Enniskillen.

o    Jim McCann emigrated to Canada; still alive in 2000.

o    Tessie McCann, 5th daughter of Pat & Mary McCann. Lived all her life in Acres, Belleek living initially with an aunt called Mary McGarrigle.

o    Thomas McCann, 4th son of Pat & Mary McCann. Farmed Corlea all his life.

Mary Montgomery, with parents Patrick Montgomery & Sarah McGoldrick; has siblings Ellen (married James Gaulgan, no family), Johnny, Pat (married Rose Henshall, no family), James.(married a Gallacher).


Spouses of John Dolan's daughters

Tommy Connelly son of Thomas Connelly and Mary (maiden name Carroll) (brother Jimmy, sister Nellie Coyle, sister Annie Christie and sister Mamie (Krug) of NY).Born 1911.  Educated at White Fathers seminary in England. Served time as joiner in early 1930s. Joined the army in 1934 from which he retired in 1955. Married Ciss Dolan in 1943. Died in 1986.

Hugh McGoldrick. Born 28 Mar 1918. Two brothers (James, Eddy) and two sisters (Cissie, Bridget). Worked in the Belleek pottery from 1933 and over 49 years did almost everything. When Belleek pottery closed for 6 months during WW2, he worked in a pottery in England. Took early retirement in 1982. Died in 1990.   Brothers were married to  Mary (daughter Breeda, grandson Richard)  and to ???>

Mickey Ward, youngest son of Sarah (Gilgun) and James Ward, born 1916, and brought up in Corlea, older sister Mary (alive in 2000, living in Ocean Breeze Florida, daughter Pat), sister Maggie (died just after the war), brothers Willie (died during WWII) & Paddy, James, John. Mickey worked his whole life as craftsman (making statues etc) in Belleek pottery. Married Sarah Dolan in 1958. Died aged 55?? in 1975.
