 The Region

  A land of breathtaking contrasts

The Mojácar Playa beach area comprises well-kept blue flag beaches with water sport attractions and lively beach bars and rugged natural beaches where you can find private coves.

Along this stretch you can also find supermarkets, banks,  boutiques, many restaurants to suit a variety of palates, and bars from a lively pub scene to romantic bistros in which to enjoy the warm evenings and admire the sea views.

Mojácar has the best record in Spain for warm, dry weather, with winter mid-day temperatures averaging 19°C and in summer up to 35°C, with the sun shining for more than 320 days in the year.

Mojacar Playa south

The old village, Mojácar Pueblo, is considered to be the most Arabic location outside the Islamic world, and its tightly packed traditional whitewashed sugar cube houses clinging to the rock can be seen from miles around.

Almeria is a land of breathtaking contrasts, harmoniously blending art, history and nature. It has a vast expanse of coast, with lovely beaches and secluded coves. The tiny villages with their whitewashed houses, and winding streets are evidence of its Moorish past.

Almeria map

The city of Almeria is dominated by the Alcazaba fortress, built towards the end of the 10th century.  It is considered to be one of the greatest in Andalusia.  Almeria today is a city enjoying economic and urban expansion, with its principal business and leisure activities centering around the sea.

Turre is a delightful small village slightly inland from Mojácar, with wondeful architecture and a tradtional, relaxed Spanish feel.

North from Mojácar lies Garrucha, an affluent market and seafaring town, which has become a most attractive tourist resort during recent years.  It has three ports, an enchanting promenade, and a wealth of excellent restaurants and taverns.

The small inland village of Bedar is popular with photograhpers and artists, with exceptional views across the campo towards the sea.

There are numerous interesting places to visit, such as the Gypsy cave dwellings at Almanzora; the old Roman town of Aguilas with its 16th Century castle overlooking the bay; the old hilltop village of Nijar, devoted to the traditional crafts of pottery, basket making and weaving; and the outdoor movie set at Tabernas, called "Mini Hollywood", where such epics as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Fistful of Dollars" were filmed. Also, Mojácar village is where the village scenes for the "Indiana Jones" movies were filmed.  Further afield is Granada, with its incredible palace of Alhambra.

Cabo de Gata

The coastline of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, south of Mojácar, is dramatic. One of the few remaining hidden paradises in the Mediterranean, the Park is a 30km long coastal strip made from a sub-desert mountain range. With its virgin beaches, lonely coves and sub-desert scenery, together with the strange natural formations of volcanic craters it offers much to see and experience.

The road from Mojácar to Carboneras is an exciting drive, with lots of high passes and hairpin bends.
