Update on Race Night
Over 120 members and guests gathered in the paddock adjacent to the Staines Stade de Illuminaire prior to moving, pints and florescent bacardi fruit juice in hand, into the grandstand for the entertainment. Unfortunately due to traffic problems, some of the horse boxes were late arriving but luckily turned up in time for the last two races. The tote was very well run by a flock of cygnets ably marshalled by Pace O'Brien and the Men's 3rd XI stallions kept the punters, jockeys and trainers in hand whilst the Ladies 1st XI fillies produced a gourmet feast of chilli.

Middlesex Hockey Umpires Association Tournament
On Saturday 7th September 2002, we are again hosting the annual pre-season MHUA tournament. The clubs, who will all play each other during the day, are Staines, plus three other local sides. First game at 0930 and the last game finishes 1730.
Season 2001 - 2002
Our first season with the atp at Faulkners finished with the Men's 2nd XI, Men's 3rd XI, Men's 4th XI, Ladies 2nd XI and Ladies 3rd XI all being promoted. The Ladies 1st XI won the Middlesex Cup and were second in their league. The Men's 1st XI finished 4th and were runners up in the Middlesex Cup. Generally a very successful and enjoyable season on and off the pitch.
The Men's 5th XI have joined the Surrey Open League for 2002 - 2003 and we hope to have a Men's 6th XI in action very early in the season.
Gerald Dare and his assistants (we now have 16 qualified coaches in the Club) now have 80+ colts from 5 - 16 years. Help is always appreciated on Sunday mornings.
Astro News
The construction of the pitch started in late December 2000 and was quickly
abandoned when the tide started to come in as the plant was starting to sink
in the mud. The contractors started again In February and the pitch was playable
from May 2001.
It is interesting to note that despite all the rain during last season we did not have to cancel a single game of hockey on grass at the Club.
A very successful and enjoyable Club opening day was held on 2nd June with over 80 members playing in 3 inter-club games. The first game was started in traditional style, ie a bully, by John Hardman and Arthur Morris. The AGM held after the last game set a new attendance record with over 120 members being present. A superb barbecue, organised by the stalwarts of the 4th XI catering corps, and a disco in the evening rounded off a historic day for Staines HC.
The first goal on our pitch was scored by Lee Atkinson, the first blue card was given to Edward Scott by Alistair Clark & the first green card was also given to Edward Scott by the other umpire Jonathan Howell. Edward would also like to thank all the other players in his team for agreeing not to pass to him for the first 15 minutes!
International Weekend
On 15th July, we hosted the annual mixed international between England & Wales which England won 2 - 0 watched by a crowd of over 300. The trophy was collected by England Captain Mike Farmer who was, according to Bill Colwill of The Independent 'solid at the back'. Congratulations to Mike and James 'Larry' Chapman on their selection.
Thanks and congratulations must also go to John Hardman who, with his numerous helpers, organised the weekend events from the Civic Reception on Saturday 14th, Sunday morning training, Sunday lunch & tea, pitch side barbecue, the Staines Town Band, the Colts tournament and all the other little jobs that made it such a superb weekend.

The day will start with a Colts match at 1200, followed at 1300 by the Centurions playing against Merton. Staines HC have been playing Merton since 1907 and this is the oldest ongoing club fixture. Apparently two of the Centurions did play in the first game!
