Match Reports For Week 9 Sat. 28th Oct. Season 2000 - 2001
Mens 1st XI
Staines 1 Old Georgians 7
Not much to say about this game, for the first time this season we played badly and deserved to be on the wrong end of a pasting. With both Johnny and Stouka out for this match the average age of the team was halved, which is more than can be said for the average weight of the team as both Duncan and Fu (both sponsored by Dunkin Donuts) remained on the pitch for the duration. Too many mistakes and a general lack lustre performance gave Georgians far too many opportunities from which they capitalised. A consolation goal at the end did little to raise team moral. Next weeks fixture against Old Kingstonians is a must win match if we are to start making any progress this season.

Men’s 2nd XI: Staines 4 Wokingham 2
It was unsurprising that an early goal was conceded against a surprisingly weak Wokingham side. Our pre-match preparation was rather shambolic with a combination of late arrivals, the First Team stealing a player at short notice and a last minute scramble for a replacement. It should be said that our "stand-in" left-winger in the shape of Colin Reed did a sterling job.
After 15 minutes and being a goal down, Staines started to gain some composure. A simple move produced one of the most spectacular goals we have scored for some time. From a sideline hit, Rodney Crowe found Andy Oliver whose firm pass into the D was met by a flying Roger Greenway close to the penalty spot. His single touch propelled the ball right into the top corner of the net giving the keeper absolutely no chance.
Slack defending allowed Wokingham another goal before Staines moved up a gear and produced two more excellent goals prior to half time. The first was again from Roger Greenway with another sharp deflection. The excellent providing cross was this time provided by our speedy debutant right-winger, Kiwi Richard.
For our third goal, Kiwi Richard also provided the cross BUT ALSO the finish! After a dashing run down the right wing, he looked up to see that no Staines player had managed to keep up with him and get into the D. Accordingly, he played the ball onto a Wokingham defender’s stick then fired in the rebound with a diving reverse stick sweep.
The second half saw Staines dominate and James Gilchrist, with commendable finesse, scored the fourth and final goal from the penalty spot. The stroke had been awarded after Andy Oliver’s surging and penetrative run into the D was stopped by a crunching stick tackle.
Roger took the Man-of-the-Match honors while Mikael "I’m not too hot at one-on-one’s with the keeper" Quinlan, unfortunately, succumbed to the Dick of the Day award.

Staines Men’s 3’s - Match Report 28 October 2000. V. Woking 3.
We knew this weeks game would be a tough one against the 13-0 thrashers of Brighton. Our concerns were confirmed after the opening flurry of activity, Woking clearly not fielding a single wheely-bin and being extremely quick and creative.
Within 15 minutes Woking had taken a 2-0 lead, both goals from fast breaks in open play. But Staines doggedly fought back and started to carve out a few chances of our own. By half time we had got to grips with their attacks, much to their frustration, and a couple of near misses by our forwards advised them not to be so cocky.
Woking’s short corner routines had all come to nought, resolutely defended by the specialist defensive team, until early in the second half when they managed to strike one in for their third goal. Again Staines closed up shop when on the defensive, Dave ‘No Frills’ Lacey executing several key tackles to be awarded Hero of the Day.
Woking were very dangerous on the attack, but Staines were at times equally threatening. On our forth short corner of the day we gained some reward when another well executed routine resulted in the ball arriving to Rowley, who calmly swept it home, 1-3. Unfortunately not long after, Staines players started dropping like flies. First, Whispering Sid’s hamstring unravelled in dramatic fashion - he went down as if shot by a sniper and could not continue. Backs to the wall now with 10 men. Rowleys knee decided it did not want to function properly, so it stayed in our own half along with the rest of him. Then the ‘pinkster’ Andy T did his sack of King Edwards impression as his ankle went limp. In addition the hard working Rengger had blood all up his back, not sure where he was wounded unless their centre back had done a ‘Monica Seles’ on him.
Staines continued to operate a successful damage limitation exercise, although Woking pressed forward their numerical advantage, they never really got a shot at the target. Twang Duffield’s duracell batteries are still working, he took great delight in showing Sid how wonderful his own hamstrings are now. So we lost 3-1 but it was another good team effort against what must be one of the promotion favourites. Deano was awarded the Donkeys Arse, not entirely sure what for, perhaps it was jealousy because he has just had a nice holiday, bought a shiny new boat.
N.B This week Alpesh arrived ON TIME !
N.B.#2 After the game there was an amazing sausage incident involving Gizz which frightened several of the Woking ladies.

Mens 4th XI
Staines 4's v Newbury 3's at Cranford
Result: Won 5-0 (defaulted)
Were Newbury so scared of the mauling we handed out to Henley that they took a 5-0 defeat as the better option?
Do they play in yellow ?
Probably not.
At least we didn't concede a penalty flick this week !!!

Ladies 1st XI
With 3 wins out of 3 in their last 3 games Staines Ladies 1st X1 are showing fine form this season. On Saturday 28th October with a friendly away game against Farnborough, Staines dominated the game and 2 goals from Jo Ive and 1 goal from player of the match Jo Strudley gave Staines the 3-0 win which was needed in preparation for this weekend’s League and cup games.
Ladies 2nd XI
Hounslow & Ealing 2 Staines 3
Well we'd won this game before it had even started on the quantity of hangovers some of the Staines players were sporting! The game got started and Staines were soon off the mark with a goal from Juliet, but Hounslow & Ealing equalized soon after and then scored again to take the lead. It really wasn't the prettiest of games, not helped by the extra water on an already water based pitch, covered in leaves. However, as the hangovers started to clear, we battled on and Juliet then scored again off a ball from Fish. Anya who courageously played with a bad back, saved a flick, clearly desperate to not get a mare of the day again this week. After half time, we started playing a lot better and Jude raced down the left wing to score a cracker on the edge of the D to put us back in front. It then got rather scrappy again, but we stuck with it and nearly scored another one as Burkie hit the heady heights of the D only to be denied by the keeper.
Ladies 3rd XI
Staines 2 - West Hampstead 0
Despite earlier rumours, it was not a league game, but a nice 4pm startatToy R Us in Hendon. It was a good start with 11 players apiece, but we were somewhat concerned about the leaves on the pitch, along with the big black rain clouds hanging around above.
Staines went off to an early lead with a cross from Kath Windsor Bayne to Sarah Davies, unfortunately it was saved but Linda McCormack got the rebound and we took the lead. 5 minutes later, Sarah Chandler scored and we had visions of a repeat of the previous week.
However, W.H. then put on the pressure and our defensive Mrs Ross, Sarah Pix, Nicki Laszlo and Jeanette Tucker, had a somewhat busy time trying to clear it beyond our 25-yard line. Sharon Marwick made some good saves in goal but I think Jeanette is owed a special mention for the save on the line along with a few other useful deflections. We also welcomed back Alison Ford who played up front this time and worked well with Deana Tarrant who had changed to Midfield.
It was now raining Cats and Dogs and the waterproof mascara was not so waterproof! Vision was getting bad. With 30 seconds to go until halftime W.H. got another penalty corner, but once again the Staines defence were out strong and the ball was cleared. By half time half the pitch was covered in a pool of water, and the leaves still continued to fall, it was therefore decided that the pitch was now dangerous and the game was abandoned. However I think half the Staines team just wanted to get back to the club for a beer, purely for medicinal purposes.
