Match Reports For Week 4 Saturday 22nd September Season 2001 - 2002

Mens 1st XI

Staines 0 Oxted 2

Our last match before the league starts, and the first round of the HA Cup brought Oxted to the fortress Worple Road. Oxted who were runners up in our league last year, were to provide a good early season test for the blue army and benchmark the standard of hockey required to seriously challenge for promotion. The match was always going to be a tough one, with honours even from last year at one win apiece.

Staines started the match convincingly and created a lot of the early pressure, but were unable to turn possession into goals. Oxted soon began to assert themselves on the game, and continuous attacking in the latter part of the first half finally resulted in a goal as the Staines defence cracked under pressure. The game was still delicately poised and with only one goal between the two sides at half time the match was there for the taking. Unfortunately it was Oxted once again who made the most of their possession and put the game out of reach with a goal five minutes from full time. Overall it was a good performance, but highlighted a number of areas in which we need to improve, in time for the first league match against Lions on Saturday.

Staines 7 Henley 0

From the start Staines pressured Henley and this paid off very early on with a lovely strike from Sue O'Connell deflected in by Jo Ive. This continued throughout the first half with goals from Kerry Maskery, Nicki Walsh and Lou Delaney. The second half then started in similar style with a quick goal from Alex Stacey. Ruth Hine then followed with a fantastic flick from a short corner. To round off the scoring Lou Delaney scored her second. This is a very promising start to the season and bodes very well for the start of the league this coming Saturday against Ashford.

Match Report - Staines Ladies 3's

Date: 22/9/2001 Team: Staines Ladies 3's Opponent: Henley Ladies 3's Result: 3-0 win to Staines

Staines Ladies 3's had a slow start to the game, suffering from a lack of control and passing through the middle. This early sluggishness was revised 10 minutes into the game when Aly Shomberg took the ball from the defending 25 yard line up to the D and gave it to Linda (Skids) who took a shot but failed to hit home. The deflection from the Henley Ladies 3's was put away by Alison Ford for the first goal. This enlivened Staines who 15 minutes later after sustained pressure on the Henley 25 yards scored another goal. This was set up by Kerry (Burkie) who took a free hit from the top of the D, and was picked up by Juliet Porter who deftly and persistently knocked the ball around the goalkeepers feet to get the second goal.

The second half saw few incidents of note but for another free hit from Burkie which was classily deflected past the Henley goalkeeper by Alison Ford for her 2nd and the teams 3rd goal.

For the second week running Sarah Pix was voted player of the match.

Quote of the week was from umpire John Hardman: "Staines, you snatched a 3-0 win from the jaws of a 12-0 win!!" Thanks John.
