Ladies 1st XI

So this is what South League is about....travelling 2 hours (via Central London, past the London Eye...Jane was navigating) to play on a leaf infested pitch, have crap teas and then come home again. The ladies headed off to the tropics of Tulse Hill on Saturday to play against the team who were relegated from South Div 1 last season. After much discussion of what tube stations they were all coming as with Captain Kate suggesting sticking Uncle Ben's rice on her upper lip and being Ruislip, Mellie thinking Ashford were playing (long story) and Ellie (Smelly) revealing that she has a dressing up box with a French Maid outfit, the team were fit and ready to go.
After further delay of a missing umpire the whistle eventually blew. A mature forward line who's combined age was 126, and that's 3 of them, battered the Tulse Hill goalie. A fine display of gymnastics stopped the goals going in, but soon the cracks appeared and Ros 'Bambi' Suter and Kerry Maskery put two away. Final whistle blew and off the happy Staines ladies went in the knowledge that they were top of the league. Bambi was awarded MOM for running so much and leaving fence imprints on her face and Doris of the Day went to Mellie again for various reasons ranging from Red Lights, £120 fines, forgetting accessories to not knowing Shay's car.

Sunday 27th September - England Hockey Association Cup Round Two V Aldershot and Farnham

'The Day of The Great Clean-Up' had dawned and the ladies began their warm-up by ripping up carpet, cleaning iron gates, painting curbs and going to Tescos. After a pre-match session with 'Coach Duncan' the team were ready to take on Aldershot who they had beaten the previous week 3-0.
A new midfield line-up dazzled with skill. They had vision. They had power. They provided perfect balls to the forward line. They were Audrey, Smelly, Timer and Buffy. Yet it was the central defender Jane 'Only 3 goals for me today' Alderson that battered Aldershot. She's getting the beer in next week! Not to be out done Audrey, aka Victoria, and Ros both got one each. Strudders has a brilliant game on the right and was very unlucky not to stick a couple of goals in herself. Aldershot did get a goal but Twinkle Toes doesn't want to talk about that.
Top coaching from Duncan on the side, chants, abuse and laughter from the dedicated supporters and Wendy not realising the game was over led to a great victory and the road to Europe continues. Well done chick-a-dees!!!!! Thanks Supporters!!!!
Baked potatoes went down very well afterwards too. No crap teas at Staines, that's for sure.

Ladies 2nd XI

9.30 Saturday morning, T-shirt weather gone and rain threatening, it can only mean one thing League matches have started, and it's Harrow away!!

This season is straightforward for the Ladies 2s, WIN THE LEAGUE - no pressure then. We have a new captain Lou Delaney (Ju well done for last season), a new addition Suki Gilliland, and Sarah Hamilton (aka Baldie) joins us as striker. John Stannard our previous coach decided he needed a rest from spending his Wednesday evenings with a squad of hot sweaty and out of breath ladies (we very much appreciated all his efforts with training-thanks John). So who better to fill that mantle than Duncan Foster, who appears to be in his element!

Today was never going to be easy. First task get to the ground by 10.30 for an 11.30 game. The idea being that we have 15 minutes to chat and 45 minutes for Duncan to have a team talk and then warm up. Simple huh?

First task failed spectacularly everyone got lost with one exception I believe Anya (there's always one-it's a team game Anya). It's clear that we are as a team navigationally challenged. Oli, Ali and Kate found themselves leading the convoy-big mistake. Oli has a selection of maps in her car, sadly none cover Staines and the surrounding area. We guessed the route well until we hit the A40 and went into London instead of out-well Harrow and Harrods sound similar. Unbelievably everyone else actually followed us! Kate announced if we go past the Shell garage, we've gone the wrong way, this as we were passing said garage-thanks Kate! Frantic phone call from captain, 'do you know where you're going?' (Not the sort of question that required an answer really), we came off and headed back in the right direction. Still on time for that 10.30 meet-impressive or what?

Turns out it's a chuffing long way to the ground from the A40, 10.30 ETA not looking so good now. However no further navigational mishaps (Hurrah) and we arrived at 10.45. Anya made her own way there having found a much better route apparently (someone make sure she writes those instructions down NOW). Juliette and co made it having not met at the club first, but they did miss a turning apparently (Ju in mid flow about Sid being useless at directions at the time), and they nearly had a punch up!! That 15mins for a girlie chat will now be used as additional travel time.

So down to the serious stuff. Duncan talked us through the game plan, one important thing we must be more aggressive, walk in the park for Baldie. Harrow are tough, but we know we have the capability to beat them. We started confidently, first 10 mins we were working well together and looking like we were going to score. What followed was the stuff of nightmares, disaster Harrow scored and for the next 15 to 20 mins we lost it, they slotted 4 past us. Somewhat stunned, we tried to pull ourselves together earning several short corners. Eryl came tantalisingly close to scoring from one routine, but a Harrow defender came from nowhere to keep the ball out. Another short corner found Baldie at the right post, somehow Harrow kept it out again, the ensuing goal mouth scramble should have seen the ball in the back of the net, but to no avail.

The half time whistle was met with a mixture of relief and trepidation; we knew what was coming next. Duncan arrived in the goal, and gave us the proverbial kick up the backside. His words were delivered in a calm but forceful manner; a lesser man would have lost his cool. We were second to the ball, we weren't doing our jobs, and if it continued we wouldn't have a coach. We didn't need telling twice.

2nd half and we were sharper, harder and more determined. The mid-field put in some sterling work to feed the forward line, but the goals just wouldn't come. The final whistle went, and the score remained 4-0 to Harrow. We held Harrow in the second half 0-0; but the damage had already been done.

Having accepted defeat, we went back to Harrow for teas. Thankfully they had prepared enough for about five teams. We encouraged Kate to make up a doggy bag for the journey home, just in case we got lost. However we arrived safely at Staines within the hour, and no mishaps, Ju however was last heard from stalling outside Ikea!

Man of the match was shared jointly between Ali and Eryl, while Doris of the Day went to Anya for a blonde moment in clearing the ball straight to a Harrow forward! To be fair it was a close call for that award, given the journey to Harrow.

Next week sees us take on West Hampstead at home. Map anyone??????

Ladies 3rd XI

An entertaining game that stretched from end to end provided good quality team work from both sides.

Staines eventually broke the deadlock with a goal from Julie Purbrick, only for H & W to get a quick equaliser.

Throughout the game, Staines continued to pile on the pressure to the H & W defence and were rewarded with an individual goal from Debbie Hampton.

Once again, H & W were quick to fight back to level the scores 2 -2.

With both teams getting another goal each, Staines goal scored by Claire Mosscropt the final result was 3 - 3.
