Geoff Walker and his wife Lynn started as owner drivers in 1983 buying Norsman International from Harold Woolgar of Epworth.
Their first lorry was a Volvo F88 290 which they later changed for a second hand F12 330. This was mainly on a UBC contract
running to Spain with an occasional run to Italy. Lynn passed her HGV test and she and Geoff double drove for the next 13 years.
They progressed to a new Scania 142 420 doing fridge work for D.R.Bailey of Littlehampton. Their next purchase was a meat
hanging fridge, and in 1990 a brand new 1748 Mercedes which had the Globetrotter roof conversion fitted in Holland. They went to work
for Bondalpha of Grimsby. The ERF pictured below was purchased in 1993 and assembled as a special order in the Sandbach works.
Geoff tells me this was the best lorry he ever bought, they finished running abroad in 1999. Lynn bought a cafe which she ran until she
retired in 2006. Geoff sold his last lorry in 2004 and went on to co own a fishing tackle shop in Scunthorpe until he too retired in 2008.
In their International career they travelled as far North as Bremerhaven in Germany, as far east as Kavala in Greece, and to the Southern
parts of Spain and Malta. In this time they visited 15 countries and covered around 2 million miles, quite an achievement, well done.
Geoff also sent me these picture of T.C Brears wagon and drags loaded with straw.
Above John Brears strapping down and below loading with JCB telehandler.
taken 19/04/12 M55 Junction joining southbound M6 J32 T.C.Brears wagon and drag back loading ? Driver possibly John Brears or his son ?
Phil Sherry sent me this email back in 2005 and to my shame I never got round to putting the pictures he sent me on this page, An error I am correcting now.
Hi Alan
Nice of you to reply, like a lot of peoplewho signed your guest book I really enjoyed your web site, its much more ‘realworld’ than many on the web if you know what I mean.
I’m 58 and although I started driving HGVs in 1969, I never got to drive many of the wonderful vehicles that are pictured on your site. My dear old dad though was a driver
through the war and all his working life, unfortunately he passed on in 1985 after he retired. I have to say he was a bit lost without his job. I rode shotgun from the age of 4
in some wonderful wagons though, in particular his Unipower which I cant get much information on. He hauled timber after to the war to the late ‘50’s and then drove for
J Spurling and later Moreton/BRS. He never actually had a blameworthy accident in all those years and I still have his RoSPA medals. Always very popular amongst drivers,
probably due to his scouse humour. Back in 1987 I was getting directions on the CB from another driver near Warwickand it turned out he knew my dad,
we met in a lay-by and shook hands, he said some nice things about my dad.
Anyway Alan, I will pop back to your website from time to time and look forward to the update. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
By the way there is a steam fair near me (Billericay, Essex) every year at a farm called Barleylands, some lovely old trucks are shown there, if you ever get this way
its well worth a visit and I’m sue Mildred would be a star there.
Don’t have many photos of my dad’s old trucks, just one of his Leyland Comet when he was working for J Spurling and one of a transporter he drove in the war,
I think it’s a Diamond T, not sure though. Ginger Sherry was his name.
Thanks Again Phil
