Sayanora to High Prices

Sydney Morning Herald

Despite the recent falls in the value of the yen, Japan can still be expensive if you don’t know the ropes. Rumours of overcharging on everything from accommodation to coffee are rife. Recently released Japan for the Impoverished claims to explode these myths. It shows where you can find accommodation from as little as $11 and how to get a three-course meal for next to nothing.

The book, divided into four main sections, covers the history and geography of Japan, information on visas and the postal service, sightseeing, accommodation and outlines six sample itineraries.

The accommodation section is clearly set out, with a map and directions on how to get there, but unfortunately there is no guide or rating system on the level of service and surroundings to expect. The itineraries mainly concentrate on rail travel - a drawback for anyone considering travelling through Japan any other way.

It’s a handy guide to exploring Japan without blowing the budget. Travel particularly liked how every heading in the book was also written in Japanese. This way if you’re lost and no-one can understand what you’re saying, just open your book to where you want to go and point.
