Information about me

This is a picture of me in my garden

I was born in Kent, England but I have lived in Scotland since I was 5 years old.

I spent my childhood and teenage years in Kincardine and moved to Airth when I married a local girl.

I was employed by BP for 29 years at their complex in Grangemouth, working on their plant processing North Sea Oil.

I was given early retirement in May 2003 at which time I was asked to compile the local newsletter, called THE MERCAT CRIER, on behalf of Airth Community Council. THE MERCAT CRIER is produced about four times a year and is used to inform the residents of our parish about things that are happening in our area. It is indeed used by police and our local councillor to pass on information to the parish.

Although, as this web site shows, there is a lot of history connected to the Parish of Airth it is spread about in various mediums. Many people come into the village and ask what there is in Airth. Especially visiting guests from Airth Castle. Also the population of the various villages within the parish has increased due to house building and the parish has become a very desirable place to live due to its easy access to the motorway links to both Glasgow and Edinburgh. This increase in the number of people coming into the area to live resulted in further questions about the parishes past.

I have produced a small book along with Mr Alex Martin titled "Airth Parish - A History" detailing the history of the area. This book was put into print at the end of 2006 with 500 copies printed. When the book was put on sale all 500 copies were snapped up with many being sent to various parts of the world. I am hopefull that I will be able to get some more copies printed in the near future as there still seems to be a demand for them. We were both extremely pleased with the finished article and we hoped that it would provide the answers to most of the questions asked.

We also produced a set of three leaflets to compliment the book. The main idea behind the leaflets is to give them away free to residents as well as visitors to our area. These are now available free at various sites around the parish of Airth and also in local tourist information offices. A fourth leaflet is also planned, this one will consist of a map of the parish with various walks marked on it. These walks will take the reader around the parish, past the various points of interest.

It is also hoped to have notice boards explaining what each site is and what has happened there.

Sadly Alex passed away shortly after the book was put on sale. He was greatly instumental in its distribution and it was down to his drive and enthusiasm that the book sold out so quickly. He is sadly missed.
