Dune - TV Series

Frank Herbert's original book is more than just a cool Sci Fi romp. It is an examination of religion, ecology, myths, the cost of power, and a cool Sci Fi romp. The TV version is made up of three, 90 Minute episodes. this mirrors the structure of the novel, which is split up into three smaller books.

The only major star in the production is William Hurt, who is apparently a big Dune fan. He plays Duke Leto. The rest of the actors are mostly unknown, and do a fine job. Most of the Fremen are played by Czech actors, so they all have this weird accent thing going for them, which works quite well.

Most of the stuff which was left out of the David Lynch Movie is in this. But there are some odd changes and omissions. Another small quibble is the way that some of the dialogue has been made more contemporary.

Of the three episodes, the third one is the best, but since this is all action and plot resolution, that's not too surprising.

As one of those rare creatures, someone who loves the David Lynch version of Dune, I must say the TV show holds up well. The sets are detailed, and huge. TV shows often skimp on the sets in order to save money, but not here. The special effects are also pretty good, with the Guild Highliner folding space, a particular highlight.

7/10
