Dungeons & Dragons

Think of Fantasy and Film at the same time and you usually think of dire stuff such as Hawk the Slayer, Deathstalker, Beastmaster etc. You may occasionally find a Conan, Dragonslayer or even a 13th Warrior, but the chances are slim.

Dungeons & Dragons comes to us after being a Roleplaying Game, a cartoon, a couple of comics, hundreds of novels, and a few computer games. You would think by now that they would have a pretty good idea how to turn it into a film. What they decided to do was to make a Star Wars rip off aimed firmly at the US Teen market.

It's not all bad. Jeremy Irons gets to ham it up. Justin Whalin (TV's Little Jimmy Olsen) is watchable, and much of the special effects are top notch. There are also a couple of nice cameo's (Richard O'Brien and Tom Baker).

Unfortunately, the whole thing is a bit predictable, and derivative, and it really can't decide what tone it wants to take, fun adventure, or gritty realism. It does have its moments though.
