Gladiator

Wolf, Jet, Rhino, none of these appear in this film.

I had very high expectations for this movie, which is probably why I was rather disappointed.

I like Roman History. I spent the last 2 years at university doing Ancient History

I like Epic Movies (Spartacus, Ben Hur)

I like Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner)

I like Russell Crowe (LA Confidential, Virtuosity)

I like great British Actors (Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Richard Harris)

So why did Gladiator disappoint me? Perhaps because it is just "Braveheart" meets "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"(the film, not the book). Its interesting that Mel Gibson was first choice for the part of Maximus.

Perhaps it's because of the NYPD Blue cameraman they used during the fight scenes. Perhaps because Rome looked like a CGI city, and kept reminding me of the celebrations on Naboo.

But I think the real problem was that I was anticipating this film so much, that it could never really match up to what I wanted it to be.

I think if I went to see it again, I would enjoy it.

Still - 6.5/10
