Mission Impossible 2

Reviewed 19/07/00

The first Mission Impossible film was terrible. Probably the worst film Brian De Palma ever made (and he's made a couple of turkeys).

Thankfully, Tom Cruise wants different directors for each of the Sequels. And so we have John Woo's Mission: Impossible.

This is no bad thing.

If you look in the dictionary under "Two Gun Action", you will find a picture of Mr Woo. A legend in Hong Kong, for his "Heroic Bloodshed" style. This is where flawed, but morally centred, Heroes go gunning for the bad guys.

So if you liked Mission: Impossible II then you should check out some of Mr Woo's earlier works, such as "A Better Tomorrow", "A Bullet in the Head", "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled". You may as well check out Hong Kong cinema anyway as you are sure to find something that takes your fancy.

Anyway, how about this film.

Well, I enjoyed it. Mr Cruise cuts a dash with his new longhair look. The Thande Newton can both act and look good. The baddies are evil and cunning (Although I think we have had enough of South African henchmen.).

The only real bad point is the under use of Mr Ving Rhames. He gets a cool running gag, but that's about it.

On the whole a quality piece of action, from the current guru of the art.

8/10
