Hopefully, by the time you reach this
page you will have managed to find these ten resources, using the skills in general
Internet searching which we have previously discussed. However, if you haven't, here they
are: -

Bandolier |
Bandolier,
the monthly EBM journal, is accessible free via the Internet. I put it at number one,
because of its user-friendly style, and because it not only teaches you how to appraise
evidence, but also does as it teaches. It has added a search facility, and has a download page for back issues, and
useful links to other sites. |
1 |
ScHARR |
The School of Health and
Related Research at Sheffield is the major directory resource of evidence based
medicine. Andrew Booth maintains a comprehensive site which offers a library of core materials, a directory of EBM sites, a
directory of internet databases, and sound advice on searching strategies. If you start
here, and follow the links, you can find all the major EBM sites. |
2 |
WISDOM |
Sheffield
University offers this up to date directory of Internet and NHSnet resources, together
with collections of articles relevant to EBM. An additional resource from Sheffield is the
Trent Resource Information Gateway (TRIAGE)
which is an excellent directory of EBM sites and articles. |
3 |
Users' Guides to the Health Care
Literature
|
At some
stage, if you take your EBM seriously, you're going to have to read this series of
articles, originally published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and
held at the McMaster site. |
4 |
Cochrane Library |
The
Cochrane Library is familiar to most health professionals, although you can only access
abstracts and not full text at the Cochrane site. It consists of the Cochrane Database of
Systematic Reviews, the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE), and a
trials register. If you want
access to the full text you can subscribe for web access, or buy the CD. Doctors.net offers access to the full text of the
Cochrane Systematic Reviews (you will need your GMC number to join for free).
The NHS Centre for Reviews and
Dissemination has some tutorials
on the use of Cochrane, and you can have a look at the Cochrane User Group discussion
board (and join the Mailbase list if you wish to contribute). |

NHS
Centre for Reviews and Dissemination |
Home of
the Effective Health Care Bulletins
and Effectiveness Matters as
well as providing the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE), a health
technology assessment database, and a health economics database (NEED), this is one of the
major British EBM sites. |
6 |
Centre for
Evidence-Based Medicine |
Based at
Oxford, this site is a mine of practical information on how to find and appraise
information. There is an EBM Toolbox,
and an extremely useful tutorial on searching Medline using methodological filters. |
7 |
ACP Journal Club |
The ACP
Journal Club is worth visiting every month. It summarises studies or reviews on important
topical subjects, with comments from experts in the field, and questions/replies from
doctors around the world. |
8 |
DEC |
One of a
number of excellent Health Technology Assessment sites (see also the other HTA sites
accessible via the national site). HTA sites
are where you will find important evidence based assessments of the latest 'technologies'.
This includes not only medication (e.g. beta interferon, olanzapine, statins) and surgical
procedures, but also screening and prevention programmes etc. You can find international HTA sites such as CCOHTA (Canada) and AHCPR
(USA), via the International Agency for Health Technology
Assessment (INAHTA), which has a huge set of links to the world of health technology
assessment. |
9 |
TRIP |
An EBM
database with a primary care bias. The excellent search engine supports Boolean searching.
At the site you will also find a large number of links to resources at other centres. |
