African Pygmy Hedgehogs prefer a warm climate (above 22°C) and do not naturally hibernate. Attempts to hibernate due to lowered body temperatures can make them very ill and can be fatal, but can be reversed if caught quickly enough (a day or two). You can use a heat mat or Frisbee to keep your hedgehog warm but be sure to leave somewhere unheated so if he gets too hot he can move away from the source.
Your hedgehog needs exercise to avoid obesity and the best way to do this is with a wheel. Hedgehogs run at least 5 miles a night, some running up to 8 miles! I’m sure Mr Toffee doesn’t push that mark (as mentioned before, he’s getting on a bit) but he loves running and he has the best kind of wheel, it is plastic and enclosed bucket type. If the wheel is open the hedgehog may get his head stuck, they sometimes look out whilst running and if it does not have a solid side his feet will fall through and cause injury. As mentioned before it is important to clean the wheel every day as hedgehog’s poo on the go and it makes a mess. Hedgehog poo is quite smelly due to diet and is large compared to their small stature! A dirty wheel means their feet will get filthy and eventually sore, this can cause infection.
