Paul Denning - playing with Adrian Thomas - was again selected for the Welsh team and played in Camrose matches against Northern Ireland and against England. One win and one loss! [Dec01,Jan02]
There was a considerable Gloucestershire turnout at the Spring Fours but the only success was Paul Denning playing with Adrian Thomas & Peter Goodman (Wales) and an Irishman, who lost one life early but hung on to play the undefeated team in the semi-final and beat them by 1 imp over the 32 boards; the undefeated team exercised their choice of 8 more boards and came though in that to win (but then lost the final to the Poles). Well done, Paul! [May01]
Martin Kane and Anne Swannell have produced the best result for Gloucestershire some many years in the Portland Pairs in Mar 01, coming 5th nationally from a filed of almost 300 pairs. Eva Turner and Brian Senior were next best from the Cheltenham heat, in 8th. [Mar01]
The County teams-of-8 have won the first and second divisions of the Midlands League, retaining the Dawes Trophy and the Porter Cup. The third team also did well in the matches it played. Well done to Ian Constable who organises the team and to all who played in the many matches. [Mar01]
Well done to Derek Rue & Keith Stanley in their first match in the trials for the English Senior Team for the European Championships in Tenerife in June. They partner, respectively, Bill Townsend and Tony Sowter. If they win their next match, they are the team!
Three County players - Paul Denning, Derek Rue & Keith Stanley played in the European Teams Championship in Tenerife in June 2001. Paul played with Adrian Thomas in the Welsh OpenTeam, while Derek (partnering Tony Sowter) and Keith (with Bill Townsend) played in the English Seniors Team. The Welsh ended just below average (but did beat England en route). This English Seniors team came fifth out of ~25 teams, and just missed a place in the World Championships in Bali in the autumn. [Jun01]

From the year 2000
The County team, we are sorry to report, has failed to qualify for the Tollemache final this year. Despite soaring into the lead by beating Manchester 17-3 in the first round, and retaining that lead through the penultimate match (although tied at this time), they lost their last match by over 100 imps to come 4th in the section.
Well done to Derek Rue & Keith Stanley who won the pairs at the Seniors Congress. [Nov00] Derek Rue & Keith Stanley came third in the European Senior Pairs and won the European Senior Teams championship at Brighton this summer. Keith then proceed to Maastricht to play for England in the Senior Teams there and came fourth. [Sep00]
The County has won the Dawes Cup and Porter Cup again (Midlands League Divisions 1 and 2) and could claim to have won amongst the third team matches too! [Apr00]
Paul Denning played for the Welsh team which beat England 57-33, and beat Scotland 56-34 and beat Northern Ireland 66-24 (and lost to the Irish Republic) [Mar00]
The County Team qualified for the Tollemache final by the skin of its teeth (and thanks to the teams which stitched up Surrey and Merseyside in the last round) but its bid for fame was foiled when Berks & Bucks gave it a sound thrashing in the last match in the final. [Feb00]
Norah Allen's team lost in the semi-final of the Hubert Phillips (English Mixed Teams) competition, the best any county team has done for many, many years. [Feb00]

[Dec 00] And again to the first named pair for their contribution to England's success in the Peggy Bayer trophy. [Jan01]

In the Midlands League, the County teams have produced excellent results and this year won both the Dawes League and the Porter Cup.
The County Team qualified for the final of the Tollemache (inter-county team-of-8) with more than a match to spare and the highest score of any qualifier; a slightly changed team came third in the final.
Beck Cup, Oxford - was won by a Gloucestershire team - Ian & Val Constable, Dudley & Paddy George.
Camrose England v Wales : this match was hosted by the GCBA and Cheltenham Bridge club in Jan 99; Wales narrowly won the first two matches but the third was won easily by England. The event was noticeable for the loss of the referee, Graham Cornell, mid-game when his wife chose that weekend to deliver first baby Thomas.

Paul Denning & Martin Kane played in the World Pairs at Lille, France and came through the qualifying round and played by the semi-final but didn't get into the final. [Sep98]
