Exploring Worcester Woods

Nick Cripps

The joy of our temperate northern climate is its unpredictability. After a 'long' February we endure numerous U-turns in the weather before we truly glimpse spring. The calendar style of this book, allotting each plant a flowering month, is only a rough guide - as predictable as the weather itself!

Local features directly influence the range of flora growing in the woods. A sunny aspect and shelter from the wind can combine to accelerate flowering times. Plants on the west facing ridge of Perry Wood will often be a fortnight 'ahead' of the rest of the Country Park.

Note: Only common English names have been used for flora and fauna in the text.
