Some clubs didn’t hold heats and some pairs didn’t turn up, and it came to be a 15-pair semi-final for the County Pairs – but all those present agreed to extend the session a little and make this into the Final. And so it was, and now Paul Denning & Patrick Shields are the winners, only just ahead of Tony Hill & Graham Sadie, with Rochard Chamberlain and Andrew Kambites another 2% back in third place. SWISS PAIRS 2003-2004

We had a total of 53 pairs play in the Swiss Pairs this year, but the maximum turn out we had on any one session was 38 pairs. Many people warned that they weren’t able to turn up on some session, but almost always some pairs forgot.

The results are match-pointed across the field and the %age score achieved is converted to VPs on a scale which needs above 68.5% to achieve 20-0.

Obtaining above average on all 8 boards in a match is a rare feat, only achieved by  Albert Sproston & John Goodwin (match 1) and Margaret Sykes & Megan Davis (match 11) and Ruby Wissenden & Heather Parker (match 15).

The draw on the first 3 matches is random, but after that  we arrange pairs to play people on around the same score.  No re-matches are allowed until the last session, and few were needed then.

There were 6 results of 20-0 on the first evening and only 2 results of 20-0 on the last evening, but there were 9 such results in the December match!

The highest score on any one match was Cynthia Moore & Geoff Paterson (85.2% but only a 6 board match) followed by David Atthey & Andrew Kambites (79.9% in match 8) and John Rookwood & Derek Rue (75.7% in match 10).

The top scores on each of the sessions were

Sep 03 : Roy Coallard & Mark hearsey, Nigel Hayman & Frank Shaw got 48

Oct 03 : Wendy Angseesing & Peter Waggett with 48

Nov 03 : David Atthey & Andrew Kambites with 56 VPs.

Dec 03 : John Rookwood & Derek Rue scored an amazing 59 VPs out of 60.

Jan 03 : Paul Denning & Tony Hill with only 43 VPs.
