genealogy: Meyboom/Meijboom - a short history

Apart from my interest in travel, I'm currently getting into researching my family tree, something known as 'genealogy'. It's all a question of patience and to some extent luck. Fortunately, with the name 'Meyboom', it should prove to be a lot easier than researching say, 'Smith' or 'Jones'.

Meyboom v Meijboom - Much of the ancestry lies in the Netherlands. Recently my father discovered that the official spelling is 'Meijboom' - guess my grandfather (Pieter) was so overcome with the birth of my father that he forgot how to spell his sons surname on the necessary documentation!!

My ancestors originated out of the Dutch city of Dordrecht (which was annexed by Rotterdam in 1934). Around 1700 the early Meijbooms moved to Pernis (an important fish port at the time). My great grandfather was a fisherman there.

Meyboom Genever (Gin) - Things get interesting when you discover there's a drink named after you. Even more interesting when you find it's 47% proof genever (a Dutch gin)….hic! Produced by a Belgium firm, I'm still trying to persuade them that I'm a family 'shareholder'. If that fails, maybe I'll go along the lines of copyright infringements!

Are you a clan member? If you too are a Meyboom or Meijboom and think you are linked to this side of 'the clan' then please get in touch.

travel

I've been around. Since I've been in nappies (I've grown out of that phase now) I always been on the go. From travelling the veldt of Southern Africa to climbing volcanoes in Colombia, the travel bug remains. I'vewhen in rome... now been to over 40 countries (link) and visited all the continents apart from Antarctica (as I don't wantto leave my tourist footprint on the pristine landscape, I intend one day to work out there and actually help the environment rather than hand over thousands to some 'eco' tourism firm to pollute the area. I actually spotted some post with the British Antarctic Survey, but unfortunately I didn't have enough experience).

I like to travel as much as I can, although 4 weeks and limited pay cheques will only allow you to take relatively short stints. I'm still looking for that job which will allow for extensive (paid) travel. Something along the lines of inspecting eco holiday packages to assess how 'eco-friendly' they are would be interesting.

goodbye berti boy!!I'm Dutch and I'm mad enough to support the Dutch national side (when they're winning. As they haven't collected much silverware of late, I wasn't really bothered in saying much more on the subject. But there are such sublime games that I have been able to go to (Hampden, 2003 (Scotland 1 - Holland 0) and the oranje-tastic game in Amsterdam (Holland 6 - Scotland 0)). In the meantime you can read more here. I think the picture on the right sums it up nicely ("bye bye Berti!").

What better way to spend your holidays recording landscape scenery which has a limited shelf-life? The natural landscape is being swallowed up and being replaced by ‘legoland landscapes’, transformed into one-season cash-crop plantations and altered ecologically through over-grazing and changing seasonal temperatures. So many threatened landscapes, so little time to photograph it all.

I hope to have my online gallery here soon. They’re not quite Peter Lik standards (I wouldn’t have a desk job otherwise!).

You may also look at my brothers pics. Seeing he only started ‘shooting’ 4 years ago, his photos aren’t bad!

environment

I'm 'aware' of the environment and see myself as a bit of a 'greenie'. Call me a hippie if you like, but I say no to GM shit, and yeah baby, to reusing and recycling, and 'up yours' to that gun-toting cowboy' George Bush. And I adore composting. It's good for those runner beans. Who needs GM?
